I don’t think asus has grasped the significance of trying to lock down a general computing device. Maybe they’ve been drinking coolaid in Cupertino or something.
Tis was a very long oversight on my side. Wifi is ok after installing sailfish-connman-plugin-suspend. I just went one year without wifi for nothing 
Even seems to fix hotspot with screen off.
