I think I’m for it but OP is a ulyssess level consciousness stream mess, more stickies sure… But grifters that will use AI rewrite-in-rust and sed ‘donation-link’ nah screw them (not like you can stop them tho, if the whisperfish/telegram rewriters just posted binaries on openrepos without: hello sfos community, we have STRONG opinions to use AI to farm donations and we sent hello msg to OG authors) how would you even tell it’s all stolen valor? And it’s only gonna get harder, we had our own grifters for a while, but at least they were just claiming upstream work as their own not sidestream, it’s fcked
It’s just curtesy, not technically required, but just common sense, if every pull request was a fork etc. On the other hand if your goal is not to improve software but just to overwrite donation link, it’s very problematic, so all these AI rewrites claim they totally refactored everything (and then wooops even namespace is og kek). But technically you’re correct, it’s lawful, but community reaction to such is also, so it all balances out, we can call out obvious hacks and try to enforce the unforceable human contract. At some point we’ll lose (how about 5 rewrites of whisperfish/telegram per day)
I’ll add to that: what’s wrong with communicating first? There are people behind these projects, usually far fewer than what the git platform makes it look like. I.e. one or two. Talk it out.
