Jolla phone I3C subboard

I hope being able to upgrade to i3c will be possible eventually. I did want to experiment with it and that would need likely most of the 12Mbit/s, that the interface can provide, but I won’t get to it anytime soon!

@rgsidler what do you mean? :slightly_smiling_face: I’m just “translating” what was hidden in the original post into (a bit harsh) statements. There is a difference between having communication issues (like not willing to respond to emails on Jolla side) and being either ignorant or lazy or hoping that fans won’t feel neglected. They have emails of all backers, there was no problem in bulk-informing about payments; there is a problem in informing the same customers on issues, however.

If I didn’t check forums, I’d be really disappointed once my order arrived - I wanted white, got orange instead. Same goes for that I2C/I3C issue. Do I need to keep checking some random boards to know that my device will be defective?

The only thing I’m doing is trying to hold Jolla to some standards. They claim to not be another kickstarter slop, but so far it is not going well.

They have not yet shipped anything, and are still preparing shipments afaik. So this is purely a assumption.

We don’t yet know if they will pack some letter explaining the Situation into the packages, send out an E-Mail to everyone affected, or something similar.

This forum here is most of the time simply the first place they communicate something. Doesn’t mean it’s the last or only.

That’s actually an improvement. Do you know how many years it took us to convince them to actually post things like this to the forum instead of making everyone connect to IRC, where these things had only been discussed in community meetings?

OK. I got it. You see it as your mission to hold Jolla as a company to some (your) standards.
That’s a heroic task you put on yourself. But don’t you think, that assuming a phone being defective and the order not being complete at receipt, although those things were announced properly as soon as the problems were detected, is a little contradictory to that full-bodied statement?

Well, these seem to be your habits, so be it. I, personally, wouldn’t consider myself to be of such importance to make such big statements.

I am by far not uncritical, but I prefer facts and physical evidence over assumption and especially before daring to judge.

Have fun

“My” standards? Interesting… So you are saying that sending incomplete and defective products is a standard that companies should follow?

As I said before: FORUM that customers are not required to be using is “not the best” place to inform about product issues. Especially that forums are a dying breed in modern internet (which is a real shame, but this is a different story). It should have been an email… On the other hand, Jolla Tablet should have taught me something…

Looks like it’s your first time delving into niche products. It looks like you’ll need to adjust your expectations (or don’t be an early adoptor and wait until things have matured).
But boy…

Yes Jolla could have sent out an e-mail informing of the same. However then a million posts would be made about the e-mail being sent, why not a post? Jolla is informing us and whether or not that is through the forum or e-mail I’m indifferent. I have the info I need and by placing on the forum it builds community. The reason for not e-mailing might be related to the fact that everybody who placed an order is clicking reply with personal questions. Putting stuff here takes away that pain point as Jolla has communicated multiple times they are willing to e-mail response, but prioritize product readiness. The Jolla Phone 2026 campaign is an overwhelming success leading to an unanticipated amount of extra email that Jolla needs to plow through. Sending an e-mail this adds pain to injury…

So I’m glad Jolla shared the info they needed to share in a central location for all to see and informing me with the info I need to know.

When a company is asking a community in the community FORUM for their spec wishlist, collects money from that community, builds the product according to that vote, advertises it as a community effort, with a link to that community FORUM and channels the whole project communication through that FORUM, it wouldn’t make any sense to me not to use the same FORUM for such information in the first place.

@Jolla Thanks for your transparency here :+1:. However, since I bet most of the batch#1 sailors aim to get a h/w bug free revision of the TOH interface board I would strongly suggest to make the decision an opt-in to get the Jolla Phone now within the next 2-3 weeks knowing and accepting it’s current bus limitations. The Other Half is a main selling-point of the device and everyone should be able to apply attachments without worrying about any hardware gotchas of the first builds later on when there is need for I3C. Accepting this as opt-out only (contact shop, get it later but fixed) means also that everyone not doing a veto on this accepts the defect blindly as default which excludes any warranty claims related to it (that’s what LEGAL says → if you get a device with the known defect and decide to return it on warranty because of it then the seller must not accept it because you bought the device knowing and accepting it).

Just my 2 cents, I’ll get in contact with support and free my batch#1 slot to someone in need.

Cheers,
Nek

Dear community,
do not let some individuals get so much power here.
For me as a long time usere these weeks are really wonderfull and i am just happy, that things develop as they do and we will get or already have one of the most beautiful mobile devices made in Europe driven by an os made in Europe to give me as much control over my digital behavior as possible in these days.
So just ignore these negatives and lets celebrate and be happy!!!

Come on, be fair, batch#1 Sailors didnt even know if the phone they enthoustiatically ordered would actually have or not a TOH, that depended on reaching the 10.000 mark.

That’s right it started as a bet, but I could have stepped back from the order once the product finalized which I didn’t do. It’s fine for me with the specs announced so I made the full payment for phone and accessorizes. Now, getting something downgraded within the seeing eye it’s a no-no for me. Each to their own and if Sailors are okay with it then be it. This is nothing against Jolla or anyone here just my observation and a kind hint.

That came with the discount.
500eur is quite a small price.
You are free to cancel your order and to reorder the same phone a little updated for 700eur.

I think that offering the first and second batch with the faulty I3C board an option to receive the revised sub-board when available, and to return the old boards to Jolla so they can offer a refurbished model at a lower price, would be a good option for those who want to use it. The sub-board looks easy to replace for the tinkerers among us.

Derailing here? I read the message that Jolla is willing to sort these things out for those that really want IC3. I don’t think there is need to cancel the order and reorder for that. Unfortunate for sure, but glad that they told us

I have a better suggestion: Rather than arguing with people who seems completely negative & uninterested in other people’s perspectives, just use this forum’s ability to Ignore them for say 6 months. Honestly, it makes this forum a much nicer place to be. (And perhaps in 6 months they’ll have learnt how to be a better human being… Or at least moved on to the next new toy they can complain about.)

Or as the old internet saying goes: Don’t feed the trolls.

You can even choose to ignore people ‘Forever’ (technically only for a millennium), a very useful function indeed.

Okay, yeah, defective might be a bit strong, it’s just the word that came to my mind first to describe something that should have functionality x but it’s later noticed that it actually doesn’t have it. English isn’t my native language and my vocabulary is a bit limited. But still, I’d like to get mine replaced somehow at some point just to be sure that I can have all the functionality people are developing for our phones and not notice at some point that I can’t have something useful just because the first devices have that limited board and there is no way to go around it. I could even pay for it myself if the replacement board isn’t too expensive. My point was just that I hope we are offered ways to get the non-limited board that will suit for people that are comfortable doing the work themselves but there would also be an option for those who don’t want to take their phones apart by themselves. And of course we don’t know yet which spare parts will be available for order later, the email thingie would be great if Jolla is not planning to have that board available for all to purchase

Correct, the sub board is only connected with a view screws and connectors so replacing this should not be to difficult, though the camera getting stuck in the mid frame might still be an issue
