Inari Blue Notifier - app to make the Inari Blue logo react to calls and notifications

So, I’ve had my Jolla Phone 2026 almost 20 hours, which means an app is already overdue by at least 5 hours!

OpenRepos is currently down, if you want to install the latest version manually, here you go:

https://openrepos.net/content/rikudousennin/inari-blue-notifier

Anyway, with this app your Inari Blue logo reacts to incoming calls and notifications by a pattern you choose.

You can configure separate patterns for notifications, calls and even calls from favourite contacts (if you grant the app access to contacts) or any custom app you want!

It uses a background daemon that sits idle and does nothing while waiting so it does not consume battery.

That is lovely, thank you

Question, since it’s a daemon, maybe you know if it will impact battery much?

Unless I implemented some part wrong, it should consume effectively zero battery while running.

It’s fully event driven, meaning nothing happens until something triggers it (incoming call, you toggling the Jolla Inari Blue icon in top menu).

I’ll properly test it tomorrow but I think you won’t notice any battery consumption.

Edit: A quick check in SysMetrics confirmed it just sits there doing nothing and using no CPU.

Uh, again, Great work Dominik :ok_hand:t2::clap:t2::clap:t2:

I already had in mind to Build such an App but currently my time is very Limited :joy:

Absolutely awesome. It blinks sharply on calls, even in silence mode enforced by Privacy Switch. This exactly what the Inari Blue TOH was calling for! You deserve more likes!

That’s very nice to hear, thank you

Comments:

  • the Inari Blue Notifier does not take over if the Inarie Blue setting in Top Menu is set to ON (note that it seems to be ON ny default on boot)
  • If the phone rings and the user flips the phone, SFOS automatically mutes the ringing. However, the Notifier keeps blinking.

Both are intentional, tbh. If you want the original behaviour of just breathing, my app would prevent it, so it actually backs off when it detects you toggled it. I might make it configurable in the future.

The app was made with the phone being screen down in mind, it’s meant for cases where you want no sound, only the led.

There’s now a GUI: Inari Blue Notifier | OpenRepos.net — Community Repository System

A rather simplistic one (just start/stop), but eventually it will have configuration.

Ok, well thought. i recently had a bug that the Ibari Blue was ON by default at boot, making your app unusable immediately at boot; but the bug seems gone now, maybe with the recent 5.2.0.18 update, so all great.

Assuming the phone is silent screen down, if the Notifier signals a phone call, and I turn the phone to see who it is, and I decide to not take the call and put it back face down, SFOS mutes it and one could think it would make sense to mute the blinking as well. In any case it is a small detail. The blinking is very discrete, so it does not matter much if such mute function would exist.

Thanks for the GUI; the icon is also very nice.

One thing I would love is if it could signal favourites, for example a faster blink (or breathing) if the call (or even message) came from a favourite. That would make for a great “do not disturb” mode where I still can know if important people requesting my attention.

EDIT (ADDITION): I understand the app is to be used in silent mode (this is how I will use it as well, immediately! So nice!). My argument was that “muting” (turning off) the light would make sense if I decide not to take the call (by flipping the phone back to face down), similarly to how SFOS mutes the sound in similar cases when sound is activated. but I understand this is much more involved to program, and does not add much in the case of an already very discrete light.

To be honest the absence of such app was a disappointment to me. I expected Jolla to provide something like that bundled, and as you demonstrated it was not a very difficult task for a competent professional.

(I still hope Jolla or someone else will make a multifunctional notifier TOH with different colors or blinking patterns for calls, email, messages.)

Well, the app will eventually also have a pattern for notifications, mails, messages etc.

For now I created some GitHub issues, so I can keep track of feature requests: Issues · RikudouSage/harbour-inari-blue-notifier · GitHub

just a minor thing but it be possible to move this part of to the settings app, instead of having it as standalone app?

Hmm, makes sense, I’ll add it to issues.

A few updates have happened, you can now select a pattern for the call.

Custom editor doesn’t exist yet, so only a few predefined patterns exist for now, but the editor is coming next.

Whenever I try to install this app I get a failure.

I go to the openrepos.net page, and download the .rpm file (I tried version 1.00, 1.1.0 and now 1.2.1) then I click on install and every time I get an error message saying installation has failed.
In the settings menu the option “allow untrusted software” has been turned on before downloading the .rpm file.

There is no indiication to WHY it has failed. Can you help? Are there files that should be installed fiirst?

Don’t. Use the Storeman App.

(Or, if you have to, add the publisher repo using ssu as user, but that’s rather advanced usage.)

Things like Storeman (and the underlying package system) have been invented so humans never have to ask this question.

But the answer is yes, the daemon package has to be installed first.

Exactly as nephros said, the app tries to install the daemon automatically, but if you don’t add my repo (e.g. using Storeman) it has no idea where to get that daemon from.

If you enable the repo, it knows the daemon is there and automatically installs it.

I recommend reading a bit about how repositories in Linux work, e.g. this article: What is Repository in Linux? [Warehouse of Packages]

As for why the error doesn’t say anything beside that it couldn’t install the package, there’s nothing I can do, when you install a rpm manually, it’s handled by native installer which doesn’t show any useful error, that would have to be fixed by Jolla.

The update with defining custom patterns is live! So go nuts

Great. Thank you. Patterns are great. Now for different events!
