Gecko ESR115 development

Wow! A Browser version that would be still supported! Big Deal!

My biggest fear for the Jolla Phones success was a super old native browser.
I bet it is prepared for the 5.2 release of SFOS which they target to get it up and running for the Jolla Phone release. :rocket:

With the current inflow of AI assisted finding of security bugs, the browser is probably the biggest problem in terms of security on Sailfish OS. I hope for a newer browser, not only for security reason, but also to allow me to browse a larger portion of the web (some pages don’t load, others have ā€œonlyā€ a broken layout).

Especially good job hiding it - since it looks like 1 developer across the whole board of repos - job that was surfaced when done on all fronts. Good dev, keep it up

That would be a fast release schedule. We have been on 5.0 for more than a year. (with 5.0.0.67 releasing april 17th 2025)
I don’t know how realistic it is to expect 2 version bumps in less than 2 months.
Maybe for the J2 september batches?

EDIT: 5.0.0.67 was not the first 5.0 release. 5.0.0.21 was released october 24 2024. So far more than a year, more than 1,5 years.

I think i remember Jolla communicating that 5.2 is the target version for the Jolla Phone.

I’d guess, that they alredy have a pretty far developed Version of a potential 5.2 internally. Maybe the 5.2 will initially only hit on the Jolla Phone and might released a little later for all the other devices? But you are right, that would be a very fast pace for what we have seen in the past.

Jolla had initial plan to release 5.1 in autumn of 2025. As it has been in internal testing for so long and probably seen quite a few internal versions we might not see many 5.1 releases. So I agree, very likely that Jolla phone will start with 5.2 and others follow later

Very much so. Sailfish OS 5.1 was released to Early Access yesterday. Sailfish OS 5.2 is a baseline for Jolla Phone. How does it goes with others is to be seen. When it comes to updating ESR115 to 5.1 that won’t happen I can say as we’re already close to 5.2.

We’ll continue focusing to Jolla Phone and delivering it with Sailfish OS 5.2.

For all the talk about the catching up with the engine and compatibility issues. I’d like to say, that I was more than just a little pleasantly surprised how youtube.com is being handled by the stock browser. I don’t know if that has directly to do with the engine or some specific implementation for youtube but the out of the box experience is wildly superior to iOS and also Android, largely because for whatever reason, the ads ā€œdon’t workā€ but the rest does, including a live preview of a running video on the home screen tile.

It works like that with other video too, (and has I think always been like that) proper multitasking!

That’s big. Can others confirm?

That has been the Sailfish experience for ages. I don’t have the new version and device yet, but even on Sailfish 5.1 that is the case.
