Okay so I’ve been thinkin’… When life gives you lemons… no no, not that one.
I’ve been thinking about creating backup app for users of my ports. TWRP is basically dead and lineage recovery doesn’t allow backup/restore, so currently users can’t easily do full system backup and restore. So I’ve been thinking about putting page in settings for backup that basically puts entire install into .tar.xz and sends it to nextcloud (without storing the archive locally so you don’t need double space). Then small script or even a website where you pick device and upload your backup tarball and it combines it with install zip in such a way that it writes the files to the rootfs after the install. So it could be full system backup or just home or whatever you want to backup, and to restore it you flash it same way you flashed the OS which is INCREDIBLY PAINLESS and proper compared to using rsync to overwrite files live. I could then publish it for others to use (without the restore option). Some people wanted rsync, could also do that, that’s what I’m doing personally. Of course full system backup can only be restored on same model of a phone, but that’s useful in case update fails or your device dies and you buy same model again. If you want to move to new device you’d just backup /home only.
It sounds like generally good idea (especially for users of my ports) but I’m not sure if I’m reinventing the wheel. If similar app already exists let me know. If you have ideas/questions/requests also let me know.
I like the idea, streaming the backup directly to Nextcloud would also help when storage is limited.
I am also assuming encryption before uploading and some sort of integrity check.
Just throwing ideas: Undo-the-update backup. Before an OS update, offer a recovery backup tied to the currently installed version. Keep it until the user confirms the update works. This is basically a safe downgrade feature.
would be nice if it could be available to all SFOS Users and Not your Ports only, of possible
I also made a Cloud Sync App Ferry Sync based in RCLONE - it’s Main purpose is for Cloud Sync - but it can be used for Folder Backup as well - if you think your Full System Backup fits somehow to the current setup, we can have a Talk in a PM for Further Design possibilities and Integration
yes that’s the idea. Like when installing unofficial port it is flashing a zip, so i could just put the backup archive in the zip and modify install script to extract the backup zip onto the install
Restore everything by flashing zip (actually my gf running on lineage port for xperia10V) would be nice - especialy i have spare xperia in case she will break screen or lost phone. Restoring full system state including all apps and their data and settings would be cool. Week ago i had to move her data from another xperia, I spent about half hour just with installing aps. The data/config was fast because of MyBackup
on my JP2026 im fine with mybackup where i set folders of my interest and if app does not natively support mybackup i update its desktop file to make it mybackup friendly…, then it is automaticaly stored by scheduled jolla backup to my home nextcloud.
photos/videos are synced via ferrysync, because i like to watch them on tv or iPad…
That’s something that every platform outside of iOS is missing.
A perfect and simple app that can backup EVERYTHING. Icing on the cake in this case if you can flash it and restore the phone.
Definitely one of the most important things, especially with new users, replacements that will follow with j2 batches etc.
Hi- great idea!! For me I still miss the (probatley no longer to get) functionality of TWRP - and I’d like to store my backup on micro-sd locally instead of cloud.
