Community meeting on IRC 3rd June 2021

Schedule: Thursday 3rd June 2021 at 07:00am UTC (Check here for your local time)

Topic proposals for the meeting:

  • add your name/nick using the template below to suggest a topic.
  • indicate how much time you will need for the topic so we can time-box the meeting accordingly
  • please be as thorough as you can with your question/topic
  • if you can’t make the meeting please ask and then name a substitute who can in your place.

It is expected that you show up and present your topic, or name a substitute and make sure they attend in your absence. These IRC meetings are for real time participation and live discussions, otherwise you can post the topic on here and get responses that way.

We need you to be present to clarify details in the topic, and to ensure the discussion is leading to the answers you are looking for! If you do not participate or your question/topic isn’t clear enough it will be postponed. Also: Always ask for more time than you anticipate your topics needs!

Please try and have your topics ready at least 3 days before the meeting. This will help us have answers ready beforehand to save time. Topics announced afterwards will be postponed to the next meeting.

  • topic: Upgrading to 64-bit on older devices
  • some details about the topic: Many devices Jolla supports are 64-bit but so far 64-bit Sailfish is only offered for Xperia 10 II. Let’s discuss when we can expect support for all devices and how it would proceed, such as upgrading in place or first saving all data and then transferring it back.

  • topic: Update on the future of the community OBS
  • some details about the topic:
It has been some time since an update was given on the future of the community OBS, can you give one? We value current solution via OBS as it:
    • Supports porters by allowing for automatic builds of saiflish adaptation packages in the cloud
    • Provides a central location to host port packages, so that individual porters do not need to find hosting packages on random cloud providers
    • Supports application devs by allowing easy building of packages on a range of architectures and sailfish releases
    • Provides trusted package generation from source to RPM. something we don’t have when we upload blobs to OpenRepos or Jolla Store
    • Provides repositories for multiple architectures and sailfish releases to app devs when required. OpenRepos cant do this without horrendous hacks (multiple accounts) and I assume Jolla store also cant provide different packages per release

There has been excellent work by @rinigus on tbuilder to plug some of the gaps that would be left if OBS was removed, but it doesnt support hosting, so each porter would be looking to host packages wherever they can find. It also means that all builds must be done locally, which is a huge drain on local resources of individual devs/porters. It is incredibly convenient to just trigger a build, and get on with something else locally while it happens on OBS.

Finally, I firmly believe that if Jolla wants to have a community of porters and app devs, they should at least provide some services around that. Whether thats OBS, or something else, it should meet the requirements above and server the community. As has been said by others, once you have all the features of parallel, clean, cloud builds, you have effectively re-created OBS anyway

  • approx. time needed: 2 hours

  • topic: Download all e-mail at once
  • some details about the topic: The built-in e-mail client cannot download everything with a single operation. The only way to do it at all is to scroll to the earliest already loaded e-mail and then keep requesting small batches by hand. It’s completely impractical for existing accounts with many e-mails.
  • approx. time needed: 10 minutes

  • topic: UI responsiveness

  • some details about the topic: Many have observed that SFOS doesn’t feel snappy enough compared to the competition (be it scrolling, transitions of various UI elements etc) and this is not something that has to do with HW. There have been patches that “fix” the situation but jolla hasn’t commented in any of the topics. So is it something technical behind all that or just an area that there hasn’t been any time spend by the devs. And has jolla been discussing any of that internally.
    Forum topic for reference:
    Perceived responsiveness of the UI

  • approx. time needed: 15min

  • optional: i’ll probably be there but in the case i forget just answer the questions.

Next meeting is in 3 weeks!
