Community meeting on IRC 20th May 2021

Schedule: Thursday 20th May 2021 at 07:00am UTC (Check here for your local time)

Topic proposals for the meeting:

  • add your name/nick using the template below to suggest a topic.
  • indicate how much time you will need for the topic so we can time-box the meeting accordingly
  • please be as thorough as you can with your question/topic
  • if you can’t make the meeting please ask and then name a substitute who can in your place.

It is expected that you show up and present your topic, or name a substitute and make sure they attend in your absence. These IRC meetings are for real time participation and live discussions, otherwise you can post the topic on here and get responses that way.

We need you to be present to clarify details in the topic, and to ensure the discussion is leading to the answers you are looking for! If you do not participate or your question/topic isn’t clear enough it will be postponed. Also: Always ask for more time than you anticipate your topics needs!

Please try and have your topics ready at least 3 days before the meeting. This will help us have answers ready beforehand to save time. Topics announced afterwards will be postponed to the next meeting.

I know this is far too late, but since it has come up short term, I’m proposing it as a topic, since this will be discussed in the general discussion otherwise anyway. If there is no official response for it, no worries.

Name / IRC nick: Nico (or similar, need to register a new nick, deleted my old one)
topic: Freenode shutting down and how this affects #sailfish channels
some details about the topic: Most of the Freenode staff left after a hostile takeover and founded libera.chat yesterday. For context see the forum thread https://forum.sailfishos.org/t/freenode-hostile-takeover/6388 and https://www.kline.sh. Sailfish has used Freenode for communication for a long time (including this meeting). Will those channels move to libera, stay on Freenode or even some alternative, like Matrix? Where will the next meeting be?
approx. time needed: 15min, if bikeshedding is kept low.
optional: poetaster or any of the IRC old guard. This probably affects everyone somewhat.

Jolla could easily make an own IRC network. It is trivial, it takes 15 to maximum 30 minutes setting up an irc daemon and linking DNS entries.
Mine even runs on an openWRT 20$ minirouter and handles a lot of connections.

While it might be easily doable, it puts more maintenance burden on Jolla and I guess there’s enough of that already. I’d rather have them use something else instead of thinning themselves out with running those systems.

The problem is usually, that you have to moderate such a network and maintain it. This probably needs at least a half time position, which I don’t think is that sensible at Jolla’s current size.

No, really. No moderation, no maintainance, nothing but a bot for kicking / banning. I have several IRC daemons including ZNC bouncers, work is zero.
Just a thought.
