Community meeting on 14th March 2024

Schedule: Thursday 2024-03-14T08:00:00Z   :world_map:   :date:

Topic proposals for the meeting:

  • Add your name/nick using the template below to suggest a topic.
  • Indicate how much time you’ll need so we can time-box the meeting accordingly.
  • Please be as thorough as you can with your question/topic.
  • If you can’t make the meeting please ask and name a substitute.

It is expected that you show up and present your topic, or name a substitute and make sure they attend in your absence. These IRC meetings are for real time participation and live discussions, otherwise you can post the topic on here and get responses that way.

We need you to be present to clarify details in the topic, and to ensure the discussion is leading to the answers you are looking for! If you do not participate or your question/topic isn’t clear enough it will be postponed. Also: always ask for more time than you anticipate your topic needs!

Please have your topics ready at least 3 days before the meeting so we can prepare good answers. Topics announced afterwards will be postponed to the next meeting.

  • Topic: Increased root partition size on older devices
  • Some details about the topic: There are numerous threads here and in the old forum about people running into trouble after filling up their root partition.
@olf has written a good guide on resizing it. However, it’s tedious work on top of the already somewhat convoluted flashing procedure, and low-level work on the storage config can be scary.
Link to guide, that also has some links to forum topics about resizing:
Problems when trying to resize the root partition - #12 by olf
Having the SFOS installation image default to a 4 GB root partion (same as newer devices) would make things easier, and - as olf’s guide points out - an SD card can compensate for the 1.5 GB lost from the home partition.
Would Jolla consider making this change or, if not, what are the key factors against it?
  • Approx. time needed: 5 min
  • Substitute (optional): None. If I can’t make it, I’d be happy with just a reply

@Jolla, please note that @jojomen merely asks for …

…, but not automatically altering partition sizes on extant SailfishOS installations.

IMO, this simply requires changing two characters in a configuration file and no extra quality assurance beyond review and checking for typos, because the space on internal mass storage (FLASH memory) is always there on all supported Xperia models.

This measure would alleviate a very common failure mode for SailfishOS upgrades and installing SailfishOS-native software: no space left on root volume.

Exactly. Primarily, I want (re-)flashing to use better defaults in order not to end up in the same out-of-space, upgrade blocking state again.

(But, of course, bonus points for an easy to use and properly tested way to do it on an existing install.)

  • Topic: RCS Messenging
  • Some details about the topic: RCS seems to be at least the new Standard as Apple jumps on that train too (forced by the DMA of course…). On the long road RCS will be the successor of SMS/MMS services. What’s the status for RCS support on Sailfish OS?
  • Approx. time needed: 5
  • Substitute (optional): Don’t know if I will make it into the meeting due to work

We brought that topic on from time to time here in the forum (not just my me…), but it seems we never had that in a community meeting. So the main questions are if there was any thinking/investigation if and how these services could be added to SFOS.
To my mind it’s an interesting topic to also now if this might be possible as an implemented always on service like phone and SMS (as, we all know that other native messengers need to run in background to receive messages).

As said above I’ll probably won’t make it into the meeting, but in fact I’m just user and no dev and might not really help in the discussion at all.

(If I missed thst we already had that topic just drop it from the meeting.)

It would be nice to see what other distributions are doing to enable RCS. I’ll try to update this comment if I find something.
