Add aGPS on Sailfish (and maybe UBT and Droidian) - possible way

Hi !
It is why the true a-GPS while only download the ephemerides and the almanac is interesting in terme of privacy. It is just using the GPS.
You just download a map, the same for all of us, and it is your device that use it and tell where you are.
And after the download one time a day or for 48h, you could use it without data connection or Wi-Fi.
And the first fix, is very quick.

You keep your data and position :slight_smile:

Any suggestions for a trustworthy AGPS / SUPL server?

There are a couple of options:

  1. For the XA2 I mostly use my handwritten supl-proxy, that spoofs the IMSI and can even hide the proxy IP by routing through e.g. TOR.
  2. When mobile data coverage is limited (won’t happen in developped countries but here in Germany that’s an issue) I use a bluetooth GPS mouse, that doesn’t even need aGPS.
  3. The Xperia 10 V seems to have an internal GPS receiver that can perfectly live without aGPS.

Hi !
Thanks, they all can work without aGPS. aGPS is just to have the first “cold fix” that taking only few second, instead 1 or 2 minutes.
GPS system is totally without data and work alone.

On UBT Telegram a man deal of https://beacondb.net/ for a trustworthy SUPL server.

Which one UBT? beacondb.net is already available for SFOS but not for UT.

Ok nice for SFOS !
For UBT I think they working on, so probably not usable today.

How to use beacondb.net on SFOS?

The aGPS thing I did by editing /vendor/etc/gps.conf, but this doesn’t use cellphone tower data but only downloads ephemerides + almanach fast from internet instead of slow from satellite.

Under ‘Individual Settings’ there is only the obsolete Mozilla service visible.

Or did I misunderstand something?

In fact it does. The initial SUPL request contains enough location information for the server to know, which satellites might be in view (i.e. just what the almanach does on the receiver side). This location might be the position of the last fix as WGS84 co-ordinates (if recent enough) and/or celltower information.

Here is a log snippet of SUPL communication from my XA2:

  "locationId": {
    "cellInfo": [
      "wcdmaCell",
      {
        "refMCC": 262,
        "refMNC": 3,
        "refUC": my current cell-id
      }
    ],
    "status": "current"
  },

Thanks very much @kan_ibal , but i don’t look through.

Hi !
Thanks for you explains.
In my test we can have quick GPS fix 24h or 48h after the download of almanach and at a distance of 100km of where the aGPS is download. Is it possible by the way you talk ?
You sure that we can’t download the entire almanach map ?

So in Waydroid, we must have a satellite cold fix (and a download of almanach by satellite), before we can download aGPS data ?
And do you know why by satellite we download the entire almanach, and not by Internet ?

Or is the XTRA aGPS download not work the same as SUPL ?

Is it possible to test without MCC and MNC, to see what happen ?

What do you think ?

Thanks a lot
