@jovirkku Well, in that case, is there any chance that you could touch the stack to enable those of us with problems to use the phone as a phone again? Currently it’s about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike.
If you live near “East Anglia” / Lowestoft, as you profile says I found a random postcode near the center and put NR322JG in this site and selected 3G and got this message:
We estimate that we’ll be switching off a 3G mast here on 17 September 2024. So, there may be reduced or no 3G coverage in this area from then onwards. Please check back regularly. Find out more about our 3G switch off.
The Three network never had 2G and the Xperia X do not support VoLTE
I live on the South Coast of England near Southampton and, as of today and according to the ‘3’ Network coverage tracker, 3G is still available in my area. This is also confirmed by my being able to make calls successfully on my 10 year old (Non-VoLTE) Blackberry phone using the same ‘3’ SIM card from the same location. For whatever reason, since the .15 upgrade or coincidentally at exactly the same time for totally unrelated reasons, my Sony Xperia XA2 Plus can no longer make calls on 3G, nor can my Xperia 10 iii on 2G with an EE SIM card. So I’ve now retired my XA2+ as my daily driver a few months earlier than intended and moved to an iPhone 14 for work (as I need dependable reliability for work calls) and will continue to use the X10 iii just as a hobby phone using VoLTE calling.
I believe I have also hit this issue. Whilst the 4G mobile data and SMS are both OK I cannot make or receive phone calls (symptoms are as above). I made my last successful phone call on Sat 28 September 2024.
Xperia XA2 Ultra
Sailfish OS 4.6.0.15 (Sauna)
My operator is SMARTY which uses Three network. Three coverage check for Cambridge UK (CB1) states: “We estimate that we’ll be switching off a 3G mast here on 24 September 2024.”.
Checking if your device is 4G-VoLTE compatible (Xperia XA2 is listed as not supported)…
@emva My profile is correct in that I live in East Anglia but not near Lowestoft. Checking the Three site for which you kindly provided a URL, it seems that is indeed the issue and the 3G connection was switched off on September 17th. Rebooting my iPhone means I do have the ability to make phone calls but not so my wife who has a newer model of iPhone. Plainly there’s no need to discuss that here but looking at the following postings, it seems that I am not alone with my problem. Do you happen to know if the issue is just software related or is there some hardware issue as well?
These models do not support VoLTE:
iPhone 5s, Phone 5c, iPhone 5, iPhone 4s, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPhone.
There is also the possibility that the SIM card need to be renewed.
(Only if the SIM card is over 9+ years)
Other than that, i dont know. Could be both.
@emva. My apologies. I wasn’t clear. I didn’t mean iPhones. I meant Xperia X. I have managed to resolve my wife’s issue with her iPhone SE. I just wish I was able to do the same with my Xperia. Although, unlike Steve Everett, I long ago gave up work, I want a reliable phone so I’ve swapped SIMs between the X and my iPhone but it’s galling to have a piece of hardware that ought to work but doesn’t.
I was questioning whether there is a hardware issue preventing VoLTE from working in the X or whether it’s a software issue. I have searched for an answer to that question elsewhere and it seems that the hardware does support it. That’s according to this, rather old, post - https://xdaforums.com/t/how-to-enable-volte-in-sony-x-dual.3595321/
As a wise man once said:
(With Sailfish OS)
Why is no VoLTE on SFOS 32 bit devices? The hardware could do it, under Android it also does.
As I understand it, VoLTE implementation is specific to each phone in terms of different hardware/software configurations, so a lot of effort. My assumption is therefore that Jolla simply did not and does not have the resources to go back any further than the 10 ii model.
The title of this thread is wrong. 2G and 3G phone calls do work on XA2 and other Xperias with 4.6.0.15 if there is a 2G or 3G network around.
There may be certain networks where there are problems but that does not justify such a broad title.
I reported this bug report in good faith detailing something that worked before on a previous release on two different phones using two different networks, niether of which works now despite those same networks (X10 iii on EE using 2G and XA2+ on ‘3’ using 3G) still being available at my location and working on other devices using the same SIM cards at that same location.
At the time of reporting I had no idea whether other users of those devices were experiencing these problems, similar problems, or no problems at all.
I also have no idea whether it is an issue with SFOS software, how my phones were changed by the upgrade process, the networks themselves, or the way that the two are now interacting which was different before.
When community volunteers take the time to post bug reports their intentions are to help Jolla make SFOS better so that they, as users, have a better experience using this product. Being pernickety about titles, especially when the bug reporter is not a technical expert and says things as they are experienced, is not good customer service.
If it really matters to you that much, feel free to change the title, or do whatever you want with this bug report.
@jovirkku I’ve just received an email imploring me to complete the purchase of a C2. So let me get this straight. You’re asking me to shell out another 270 euros or possible 290 euros if I want a protector and case for the privilege of owning a device which doesn’t work any better than the brick I currently own.
In Cockney parlance “Yer ‘avin’ a larf”.
You have taken exception to how @Steve_Everett entitled his report and replied that there are certain networks where there are problems. As I live in one of those ‘certain network’ areas, what do you suggest I do?
I can tell you what I will be doing.
I’ll be sitting on my hands until you DO get things working. I am not impressed that you’ve left some existing users high and dry with non-functioning phones. Meanwhile I’ll carry on using my iPhone.
I think it will be insurmountably difficult to use your iPhone if you sit on your hands.
I don’t know Siri. How could I? Never used anything but Sailfish, except for a few months with Windows Phone (+10 years ago).
Having latest update …15 on 10 iii. 2G is working on Elisa/Finland simcard in “forest landarea” ok. Actually better than 4G ( voice… not data)
I have an XA2 and since 3 switched off 3G in my area I can no longer make or receive voice calls or text messages.
I have “Prefer 4G” selected in settings and the phone screen displays 4G with good signal strength.
I can however use mobile data via VoLTE.
VoLTE isn’t mobile data, it’s Voice over LTE. XA2 can’t do this and therefore you can no longer make voice calls.
edit: I’m very glad to read from you that the phone remains usable as data device also without 2G network existing.
