Zimpedia modern story

Hi,

I was happy to discover the Zimpedia app in the Jolla app store when flashing of my X10III was done. The app points to the library.kiwix.org web page, and guess what, this web page is not rendered properly in SailifishOS 5.0.0.72 web browser. Users are driven with no warning to a deadend, the page looks OK but is dead. It’s a search engine to find ZIM-files, but it yields no results.

For other newcomers, I had to use Fennec from F-Droid to download ZIM files. Compared to Android Aard2, you have lot more choices (many languages and lengths of Wikipedias, Wiktionnaries, other wikis and even 5GO of books).

I’m just missing the offline, in-page search feature, that proved useful in real life scenarios with Aard2 (while searching an info in a hurry to nourish a debate for instance).

If you need an in-page search feature, you can use the option to open your Zimpedia pages in a web-browser. It’s still offline (using a local server) without 4G data cost.

Hello. I am the author of Zimpedia.

The app points to the library.kiwix.org web page, and guess what, this web page is not rendered properly in SailifishOS 5.0.0.72 web browser.

Indeed, it is broken. For some time now, I have been planning to implement a proper built-in browser using the native SailishOS UI. It’s on my TO-DO list. No one has ever complained, so I didn’t know how much “easy ZIM archive download” is needed. I’ll try to speed up the work

PS: I recommend using the Storeman/OpenRepos version, as it is more up to date.

For honesty, and after more tests, it appears that downloaded ZIM-files are as up-to-date as Aard2 ones.

And I see a recurrent pattern in SFOS world with : Zimpedia, Patience Deck or BarWall…

  • Zimpedia gives access to a huge catalog of ZIM files, including 3 flavours of Wikipedia (light, balanced or full with images 50GO, but also lots of other Wikis, Wiktionnaries, book collections…
  • Patience Deck gather 90 solitary-card games variations
  • BarWall can generate 100 different 1D and 2D codes
  • ImageWorks picture editing app is fitted with 30 builtin image filters (stretch-constrast, equilize-color…) it is more feature rich than Samsung image editing app

There are missing things in the SFOS environment[1], there are delays in the code… but there is also great libre ressources gathered here, that could simply benefit from better marketing

  1. Like an up-to-date web-browser, a port of DeltaTouch or the support of Qualcomm’s FM radio hardware in Sony devices… ↩︎

The site seems to be using a counter bot software that breaks if no Javascript is enabled or unpopular UA is sent by client.
