Xperia 10 ii considering using second SIM card

I would like to add a second SIM card, thereby taking the space used by my SD card. Does Sailfish X automatically use an SD card (if present) for system files, cache, etc. if present at flashing of the system or can I remove it without issues?

I am still relatively new at using Sailfish X on the Xperia 10 ii. From the start, I have had one SIM card and an SD card in the phone. The SD card has been used in another Android phone previously and was not reformatted.

Sailfish only uses the SD card for backups and files you explicitly put there, so it’s safe to remove. Before pulling the card, you should either power off the phone or unmount it from Settings->Storage (long press on the SD card item).
