Virtual keyboard when bluetooth keyboard active maliit

usually, with a bluetooth or usb keyboard, the user wants to hide the keyboard, but sometimes they do not. on native android, there is an explicit setting managed by each keyboard.

i assume this is a feature that would have to be added to maliit, but i actually have no idea. it might even already exist, i have no idea. does anyone have any ideas or insights?

i have two specific use cases:

  1. lipstick2vnc - i send keystrokes with a uinput device, and that causes maliit to hide the vkb. if i leave vnc on and grab my phone, i cant type at all. i cant test UIs with keyboards. i cant use the vkb clipboard, and ctrl+v and shift+insert often doesnt work, etc etc

as soon as i set UI_SET_KEYBIT on a file descriptor for /dev/uinput, maliit-server presumably identifies it as a keyboard and hides the vkb.

  1. i use the 8BitMicro bluetooth gamepad, which works as a bluetooth keyboard with pre-mapped keys, in order to play Kingdom2Crowns and VampireSurvivors, both of which work great on SFOS appsupport. however, its not a keyboard, so i cant type with it.

just pairing the device hides the VKB, making it so i have to disconnect the controller in order to send a text
