Transfer Signal backup: Just stops the import

Trying to migrate the Signal data from one XA2 to another one, both phones have SFOS 4.6 and the same version of Signal 7.17.6.

I created a backup on the old phone and and transferred it to the new one with scp, verified the hashes. After starting the new Signal I could also select the backupe file, entered the backup decryption code and it started processing the data, a few hundred messages were even processed. Then it suddenly stops and shows the screen to choose the backup file again.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Does anyone know a possible reason or solution or have an idea how to get more details on potential errors that are occurring?

I suspect an out of memory scenario. I would try importing with all other applications closed, if you had not tried it yet.

Maybe that was actually the reason. I tried it again on another day with no other Android app and some low-profile native apps, and then it worked. Maybe just restarting the device would have helped.
