Sailfish payment apps Work Group - Europe

Genuinely, that’s nightmare fuel for some.
It just shows how diverse this community is.

The problem isn’t really that various IDs are digitalized but if/when they’re merged and all the data that used to be isolated gets centralized, that makes leaks, data theft and a variety of other abuses significantly more likely and easier.

Curve Pay (Aurora Store) lets you load multiple cards onto a profile, and will sell you a physical card if you wish.

You can also use their Smart Rules feature to specify which card gets used depending on the Merchant, Category or Amount

and you can also select which card you want to use manually.

All this is doable in AppSupport.

But I guess it doesn’t work without NFC?

No but it allows you carry one card and leave the rest at home, and still be able to spend using any of them

Having an additional NFC chip could be a nice workaround for implenting a Tap to Pay solution, but it is still not as straightforward as one may think, if produced by Jolla it should respect the whole regulation and implement all the security guardrails needed, plus it has to be then accepted (or trusted) by your bank in order for you to be able to load your card on it.

IMHO NFC passtrough in AppSupport should be investigated and if possible implemented because it represents a huge UX improvement allowing the apps that need ID verification (banking and government app) to work. It will be easier to propose a Sailfish phone to users if it means that they will be able to access services with comparable comfort of Android / iOS users.

I fully get your point and Im not really against it, but I also think SailfishOS shouldnt lean too hard on the AAS and its Android layer. After all we choose a Sailfish device to not have to use Android or Apple in some way or form.
I think it would be good to allow passthrough of NFC, but also try to implement something native to SFOS…

I’m a pragmatist as regards building hw bridges between SFOS and AAS. The fact that I can pick up packages using an Android app + Bluetooth was a win for “single-carrying” just my Jolla. Android app + NFT would be a similar lift for other people. For me, I did a paperwork exercise to get around the NFT requirement for BankID at my bank, but it’s not possible for other banks.

In terms of SFOS being treated like “Android with a different UI” Bluetooth is perhaps more damaging than NFT in that regard.

Yes! I fully agree with you, but before Sailfish is common enough to push companies to write their apps for it I could use a bit of NFC : )

An Android app does not necessarily mean that it involves Google. If the apps can bypass the Google Play framework, there is no Google involved at all.

Making sure that Android apps work will make it easier to have a complete ecosystem that Jolla users can benefit from.

With a user base of perhaps several 10.000 users, I don’t think we can expect a lot of native apps soon.

Yeah I get that point and Im also for the NFC brige. Dont get ne wrong. I just dont want jolla to focus on making AAS really good and miss out on making Sailfish a viable alternative.
Also many many banking apps flat out require google services.

Yes, that is one of the main action points of the working group being started: getting banks to ditch Play Integrity requirements.

Even so, changing those settings would be less of a hurdle for banks than developing entirely new native Sailfish apps.

And saiflish apps would need to hook into an API and I know from a german bank group that gives you access to their api but only if you pay at least a big fee in the high 5 digit euros range… And if they change version/update their api you will have to pay again! And than you only have 1 bank out of the many covered…
So this will be very costly to develop indeed.

Here to join the work group! Can help with engaging with public bodies and national campaigns, from democracy activists and digital sovereignty perspectives.

Interesting to know how that works, but I guess this is for 3rd party applications that want to link their service to a customers bank account.

Ideally we want the banks to publish their own native apps on Sailfish, or as an alternative publish their Android app in the Jolla store or something and make it work. They wouldn’t charge themselves I guess.

getting MIR, which were sanctioned off SWIFT, to work on SFOS would be great

There is a reason for those sanctions and FWIK from the company I work for, supporting sanctioned countries with technology might be highly problematic for Jolla.

Yeah, I would stay far away anything related to Russia. Hope Jolla has learned from it past mistakes

I’m fighting an uphill battle trying to convince people who refuse to buy a Jolla phone specifically because of their previous ties to Russia. So yes, it’s better to stay away from problematic countries.

Yeah, same…. For me personally also it has been quite important that Jolla shutted down operations in Russia already in 2021 by their own choice, but it is uphill battle to try straighten the facts online
