DESCRIPTION:
On my Sony Xperia 10 III, I had my email configured, after the initial installation. As my provider supports ‘per-device’ passwords, I wanted to update the account, actually by deleting and creating it again. In the mean time, I have updated my phone to the latest SFOS and now the account creation fails. This is for both the Generic email (IMAP/SMTP) and Calendar/Contacts (CalDav). The account did work after the update with the old credentials; it’s the (re)creation that fails now. The credentials are okay; I’ve tested them succesfully on a Fedora laptop, with Thunderbird.
My spare phone (Sony Xperia XA2, SFOS 5.1.0.10), suffers from the same problem.
I have a Xiaomi Pad 6 running SFOS 5.0.0.77, which had no problem with the deletion and then creation of the account. Thus, it looks like an issue introduced with SFOS 5.0.0.78 or 5.1.n.n.
After waiting appr. 20 mins. while creating the account, the error is: Connection timeout.
Email and CalDav supplier: soverin.net
Servers: imap, smtp and caldav. All with SSL.
PRECONDITIONS:
Email account (with Soverin in my case)
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Delete working Generic email and/or Calendar/Contacts caldav account from phone
Create the Generic email and/or Calendar/Contacts caldav account again (with SSL)
EXPECTED RESULT:
Accounted Created
ACTUAL RESULT:
Connection timeout
MODIFICATIONS:
N/A
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
I just resetted the XA2 (SFOS 4.5.0.25) and account creation then works okay.
I will give that a try. Currently going through the updates to get my XA2 back to 5.1.0.10.
Not really liking the idea of resetting (flashing) the 10 III and then restoring all the android app backups, so if this workaround gets the job done, I am happy.
I checked the settings and even without setting the imap4/authentication = 2 line, the value is already 2. I tried adding it explictly, but without succes. Problem appears to be something else.
Update: while going through the updates for the XA2, I have deleted and created the email account for every SFOS version and I can confirm the issue is introduced with SFOS 5.1.0.10.
During the account creation (Checking account credentials) a popup shows about “account details needing updating”. After a few minutes the creation times-out.
A previously created account still works, so most people updating to 5.1.10 will not run into problems. It’s just new users, or people adding (updating/changing) an account will be hindered by it.
Okay, another reset for my XA2 then I hope I find time to go through the same steps for the 10 III today/tomorrow, as summer holiday is just a few days away and it is my daily driver.
Ran the setup as requested. Tinkered the existing (working) account to not update; restarted the messagserver5.
Supprisingly the error is no longer a time out, but credential error. I double checked the password on my Fedora machine with Thunderbird and it is okay. Checked imap4/authentication = 2 (is reported).
All this was done on the XA2, which is my test/spare, as I need my 10 III (already flashed that this afternoon and busy getting everything from backup now).
Just a remark. I first tried to disable the other email account (not delete, but disable). With that the messageserver5 fails to restart due to a dependency. Had no time to dive in deeper, but that’s why I switch the auto fetch off, so the logging would not be contaminated by the other account (which was what I saw, the first time I ran it).
Ran the caldav test, and it runs okay. Adding the caldav via the gui also works. No idea what made it fail yesterday. I can’t think it is because I have a working config already for this server that I created before upgrading to 5.1.0.10. I’ll attach the log for completeness.
Creation of email account (still/again) gets a time out.
If any further tests are needed, let me know. With holiday coming up as of Friday evening, I may not have that much time at hand (2 weeks of cycling), but I will have the Tablet and both phones with me, via which I have been able to do all the testing so far.
Hello, thank you for your feedback and the log gathering.
About the QMF log you provided on the 9th, is it a log from failing account creation ? Or a log of syncing (from the application for instance, or from the setting page) ?
The error reported in the log is an authentication error, because the daemon wrongly choose the XOAUTH2 method instead of PLAIN. When you say that you put imap4/authentication = 2, where is it ? For which account id ?
Hi Damien, the log is from account creation, but as far as I could see, and already working account fetching mail also get logged, so that’s why I set the fetch for that to manual.
I did not ‘log’ the imap4/authentication =2, just checked it from the cli. It can only be checked for an established account of course, so it must have been for the existing one, I presume.
No worries about breaking usage. As stated, I test things on the XA2, which is my spare phone. My Sailfish Xiaomi tablet and Xperia 10 III are working fine, having email set up before migrating to 5.1.0.10 on the phone and the tablet still running 5.0.0.77.
If I find time today, I will do another full reset of the XA2, create a log for a succesful account creation with the 5.0.n.n SFOS. Reset again, upgrade to 5.1.0.10 and log the error for creation. Just to make sure where not looking at the wrong stuff.
For now, I think we best focus on the email, as I am not 100% certain anymore about what happened with the Caldav.
If you need me to run other tests, let me know. I will do, if I can find time. This weekend, I may be able to some of that.
Is there in-depth documentation available for ag-tool? More than the –help provides. While trying to debug this issue, I also try to automate it a bit, but the creation of the keys (esp. setting credentials) is not clear to me. A few examples maybe, so I can script things (or write an basic Ansible playbook for it).
the man page I find on-line is more or less the –help, so that doesn’t help me any further. Maybe I should use another tool for certain steps. I’m not familiar on how this is done in SFOS. Any hint is appreciated.
I have exactly the same error on Xperia 10 III after updating to 5.1, unable to add my email on my only phone.
I did have some issues where phone would ask me to update my credentials on 5.0, i foolishly removed the account to try to fix this bug.
