I am so tired of Google with all their ads and stuff, that I ordered a Jolla Phone (3rd batch).
I am no App user (I prefer using firefox and the website service), so I guess I won’t have any issues to use Sailfish as a daily driver…
But if I understand correctly, the Jolla phone doesn’t support any payment solution (Google Pay, Apple Pay, …) Is this correct?
Do you need any payment solution for the Jolla shop (e.g. paying for apps in the jolla store)? Is everything handled with classic card number, … or does Jolla support some kind of credit card wallet?
(I’ve got a garmin watch with “Garmin pay”, which is completely useless, so no need for another Jolla Pay).
So I guess the best solution to pay with your smartphone is to carry a VISA credit card in the case, right?
(I’m customer of the german DKB bank, and they are technologically so far behind, I guess I won’t be able to use any kind of banking app on Sailfish… But let’s see what happens…)
Yes, there is no possibility to use GooglePay or whatever, right now. The AndroidAppSupport (AAS) doesnt support the use of NFC and afaik all payment solutions are relying on NFC. And as there are no native banking apps, you need to carry the card with you.
Jollas Store doesnt support any kind of payment. All apps inside Jolla Store (Harbour) are free.
What I have seen few videos about software some banking apps might require change some settings because ptrace. Atleast finnish OP banking app works not sure about any others like MobilePay.

Yes

There’s the Jolla Shop where you can buy products (like a phone, license, accessories). This allows the usual payment methods (Credit Card, PayPal, …).
The Jolla Store is the official app store, and currently there are no pay-for apps in there, (except for Jolla licensed apps, but those are paid by buying a license, not in the Store).
There is also currently no infrastructure that would allow a developer to add a paid-for app in the Jolla Store.
According to this Banking apps on Sailfish OS DKB has worked until one month ago. Let’s hope somebody gets someting sorted out.
For me Garmin Pay is a good solution as I don’t want to let the data gigants cross reference me more (with payment details). At least I hope they don’t send my data there…
Just for curiosity: Where do you live that you can use garmin pay?
The last time I checked, Garmin pay was only supported by some minor German banks. Additionally, there are many shops in Germany, which still don’t support VISA, not to mention such small companies like garmin… Germany seems to got stuck in history, somewhere…
I live in Finland. You can use Garmin Pay through most banks. It’s essentially a copy of your Visa/Mastercard. You show your watch to the pay terminal instead of your payment card.
I was in Munich for a few days a few years ago. I was suprised how few places you could pay by card at. I even mentioned it to a clerk at the hotel. Next time i walked by there was a Swede telling him how astonished he was that you can’t pay by card almost anywhere. I’m sure the poor guy had to listen to that every day from morning to evening…
There are also many kind of payment wearables (bracelets, rings, etc) you can buy, where you can connect your Credit Card to it and pay everywhere at Shops - thats what I did now in Germany
I found some rings, but all of them where using fidesmo, which itself is not supported by most banks, and you need an additional curve credit card… But curve provides support for garmin…
Let’s see what the digital EURO does provide. But I guess it won’t get any better…
I bought a Jolly phone to get rid of all the US companies stealing my usage data…
So I guess the easiest and most secure way is to buy a leather case for my smartphone and put a Visa/ EC card in it…
Here in southeastern Germany, you can usually only pay with cash (at pubs and restaurants), and I’m glad I can still pay for everything in cash here. For Jolla, I have a PayPal account, and with the WISE card, I can also pay digitally. In Norway and Denmark, people always give me a funny look when I toss kroner on the counter, but in the end, they’re grateful that the staff actually gets a tip for once!
It was possible to get Curve Pay to work on my wifes VollaOS phone without google play services. If a future AAS update enabled NFC, it would be interesting to see if curve would work on sailfish for mobile payments.
Newer Amazfit watches also have Zepp Pay. I doubt I could get this to work in Amazfish, but, it might be possible to set up watch payments with the official app and the zepp app, then switch back to Amazfish.
With NFC in AAS we can definitely get a wearable setup going on SF right now. I was able to setup the non actual payment (ie except for adding it to a Googke wallet) side of Curve on SF, just need NFC for the last bit: Use cases for NFC support in AppSupport - #6 by rgp
