No GPS satellites at all - Is my Jolla Phone 2 faulty, or is it a software problem everyone has?

I decided to run a test today and had it search for satellites outdoors in partly cloudy weather (grey clouds).
Within 15 minutes, it spotted one very briefly. However, it still showed 0 satellites whilst in use.
Navigating with it was out of the question. The CSD tool also displayed ‘GPS: Fail’. But it only searches for satellites anyway.

This seems like a HW failure.

Yes, it’s really dangerous to use it, definitely don’t use it for driving.

I wasn’t expecting that statement (because he did manage to pick up a satellite for a very short while – and he was able to determine the longitude and latitude from that, but not the altitude).

Since you’re so quick to suggest a hardware fault – have there been several cases like this already?

Gps works absolutely perfect here, even without any online asistence i have my position almost instantly right after i turn it on

Works perfectly for me… but as did my XA2.

I had it today that my GPS was totally stuck to a wrong place. That happend shortly after a reboot. Another reboot solved that.

But that’s not normal either…

If i’m on a train in southern Swederp, sometimes the rough position will show in central Copenhagen. :person_shrugging: That’s how whatever wifi ap location guessing or some other rough location stuff works i guess.

If Cryx is only using approximate location tracking, then that’s understandable. I’m also off by about 200–500 metres on my own device. But we’re talking about the precise GPS signal here.

Looks like what could appear on some XA2s when the GPS antenna was not clear.
Bad reception. Hardware issue.
This said, yours had probably more than one sat, perhaps very briefly, as location is achieved with triangulation.
JP2 here, it also has a really impressing quick and precise GPS.

I don’t remember if there were such cases but in such conditions your phone should see 10-20 satellites. It seems that reception of satellites is weak. Was that tested with GPSinfo? It’s also a small possibility that jamming is close to you.

You should have told me before using my J2 in my car with Pure Maps and even on my motorbike for a 350 or so km trip to the countryside or another to Poland last week.

But I also travelled through many European countries even with the XA2 before the aerials finally degraded.

Hi

Using GPS Info on my Sony Xperia 10 III, the Satellite Info page shows satellites appearing quite quickly, even though it takes some time to get an actual GPS location.

However, despite doing the exact same thing on my Jolla Phone 2, I see zero (or possible one) satellites after waiting a long time (by which time my Sony phone has tons & already got a location). This makes me think the GPS antenna is disconnected.

I’m assuming there would be many complaints about no GPS lock if everyone’s phone was like this, but I’d appreciate it if at least one person with a Jolla Phone 2 can confirmation theirs doesn’t behave like this. That way I’ll know it’s not a software problem that will be fixed in an update, and so need to contact Jolla about getting it replaced. (And yes, as a last resort, I’ll try testing it after a factory reset with a clean config, before contacting Jolla.)

FWIW, the phone is running Sailfish OS 5.2.0.17 .

And yes, I do actually know what I am doing. Settings > System > Location > has both Location & High-accuracy positioning enabled (just like my Sony phone).

I juat held my J2 out of the window. It is raining and very cloudy. After a few seconds I had 55 satellites in sight and was using 19 according to GPS Info.

Getting a position normally took longer on the X III but seemed to be more accurare then. But I used «device only» mode with the X III.

Navigation with Here Wego was sluggish but Pure Maps does the job unless after pausing the navigation.

Thanks, it seems my Jolla Phone 2 is defective :frowning: . I’ll back-up what I can, and then factory reset it, before (somehow) contacting Jolla.

I am very sorry. Did you try different locations?

Yes, I tested it using GPSinfo; after nearly 6 minutes, it briefly picked up a satellite shorty. Then it lost the signal. After 15 minutes, I stopped the test.

I’ll try that again tomorrow.

It’s exactly the same as with my J2 (see the other thread).

If you are not using A-GPS and your phone does not know where it is (factory boot), it can take up to 15-30 minutes to get a fix, if you have to download the entire almanac from the satellite. During the download, you may get ephemeris from a few satellites, but you will need 4 or more ephemeris to achieve faster fix times (those shortly picked up signals are might be these?).

With A-GPS and beaconDB, locking in your location should take less than 2 seconds outdoors, if beaconDB data is available in your area.
