My first impression of the Jolla Phone appearance models

That sounds painful. But wouldn’t all that be solved with you wearing a BT headset (or not) and asking people to communicate with you over the phone?
Or at least a voice message?
Cause I don’t think any size phone would be actually solving your problem.

If I have to choose between the horses and the Sailfish phone? The horses win every time.

The best is, of course, having both.

The XA2 served me well for years. …always with wireless headsets.

Tell your Employer to install a landline

Landlines are being removed in Sweden.

As long as the horses fit well into your hands…

Let’s all hope both choices will stay compatible for you.

Really? That’s a bold move. How do your elderlies like that?

Same here in Finland, and operators are not only closing down exchanges, but in some places they are also removing the telephone wires. First major operator shut down their landline network back in 2019, second major operator shut their last exchange only last week, and the last major operator is shutting down their landlines at the end of the June this year.

There are problems to be ironed out, some more difficult than others.

The main replacement for a landline (for a senior around here) is a stationary LTE phone. Some of those now have to be replaced because of the coming transition to VoLTE. As if cell coverage wasn’t bad enough.

Technically it’s a complete mess. People that have to learn new technologies only to have to relearn them in less than a year… Progress? Not so much.

BTW, I’ve had seniors looking at my XA2/C2 and then saying that they wish their mobile phones were as uncluttered.

I think it is ultra wise to connect all critical infrastructure with wireless technology changing it’s protocols every few years. If we base all this on hardware we cannot produce and server infrastructure based on cloud services we cannot control then this brilliant shitpile of clustered single points of catastrophe will make our lives much easier and if something goes wrong, …

What could possibly go wrong? People always said: 《Put all your eggs in one basket》 for good reasons.

And do not forget the enhanced user experience of a tiny infrastructure failure that disconnects whole countries. They say that will bring out the best in us.

In Switzerland, Swisscom started to disengage analog landlines in 2017. Unfortunately, nowadays we only have internet telephony :frowning:

After holding the appearance model myself, I completely agree that the couple of millimeters difference in width make the new phone much easier to hold in your hands than the C2. The difference between the new phone and the C2 is much bigger than between the new phone and the Xperia 10 series.

So the phone is bigger but they didn’t have space for the headphone jack?

If I remember correctly they stated somewhere that the availability of mainboards with 3.5 jack was the point and not the device being too small for including the jack.

There is literally no room left for a headphone jack, even an extra SIM/microSD slot required several iterations to make it fit:

Thank you very much for the photos!

I’m going to have to wait until I can hold the phone before buying, anything from Jolla1 to Jolla C would’ve been the perfect size and now I need to try before buying. :frowning:

Except if Jolla team is here and willing to risk it again this/next year with a smaller phone I’ll be the first to order!

I still have a collection of original TOHs and Jolla 1, had to recycle the batteries as they swelled couple years back. I know it’s nostalgia, but that phone gave me joy and never got tired of looking at it. :frowning:

you’re welcome! and I totally get the need to hold the phone in your hand to feel it for yourself. Since I missed the first 2 batches (because reasons), I didn’t rush to get in batch 3 until I had the opportunity to check out the appearance models, and after that I immediately placed the preorder.

I’m glad to hear from those who had the chance to hold the mockup models at FOSDEM confirming my observations, but I also realize it’s a privilege for us who were able to attend FOSDEM. Hopefully there will still be purchase opportunity after the initial batches have been shipped, so that there are some J2s in the wild for you and others to have a chance to try them out!

ok..–ish … the real problem is digital verification, in the bank, you can not use it on behalf of others unless you visit the bank in person, and get authorisation to manage his/hers bank account(s), it should not take more than 1-7 days, if your elderly parent/person is not “fully there” it can take 3-4+ weeks.

These are the phones i got to know better

Yes, the device felt thin and well balanced compared to C2. Easy to reach all areas. And with the bent long edges of the 2.5D glass it will be even less intrusive on the hand’s reachability.
