Minimalist App Launcher on Sailfish OS

Hi All,

Can’t wait to receive my Jolla 2 phone (first time user) in (hopefully) July.

I hope someone can help me with this question:

I like to use minimalist launchers on Android such as Olauncher where instead of icons to represent the apps, you can have just the text name of each app on the homescreen. It helps to reduce the digital overwhelm for an autistic person like myself.

Are there launchers like that available on Sailfish OS?

I’m not aware if a patch already exists. You would need to modify some QML files to change the App Grid.

Hi!

In general, there don’t exist launchers for SailfishOS. But you could look for patches on OpenRepos or in the Patchmanager WebCatalog.

Here is the catalogue listing all available patches: Projects
Attention, some aren’t available for newer versions of Sailfish.

Also there is the app quicklaunch for sailfish that shows all apps with their names (native and android) and filters for entered strings

I know it is not exactly what you are looking for, but for a start you could have a look at QuickLaunch (it is in Chum). It is some kind of alphabetical list (with little icons) and you have a search field. Additionally you could put the icons for all the installed apps into one folder, such they are kind of “hidden”. Then you have only two icons: QuickLaunch and a folder with all.the apps inside which you don’t have to open.

But of course you still have the representations of the opened apps at your home screen.

Only due to more sparse information

Also, apps can be launched from “/usr/share/applications/” using FileBrowser by icthyosaurus.
Perhaps the app author could create a single modified version of the applications page and add an Open link for launching apps, perhaps also reducing/removing some of the details like permissions (rw-r-r) and file size/date, then the list would appear cleaner and there’d be no icons…just a thought.

There isn’t yet a launcher you can install to provide what you want, but it is possible to get the result you desire.

Sailfish, being a linux OS, uses standard .desktop files to launch apps. There is a line in there which defines the icon used. Removing or commenting out this line removes the icon and leaves just the name of the application.

There exists a ‘Launcher combined patch’ which allows you to decrease the number of columns in the launcher to 2 and maximise the number of rows to 10. Other options include increasing the font size, which i didn’t do in the example below.

As a proof of concept, i commented the icon lines from three apps, whilst leaving the other three as standard:

You are talking about App covers, right? This is somehow OT, but there is a patch that sets a desired size for (all) covers: force-cover-size

Maybe this can be adapted for different cover sizes at the same time? However I have mixed feelings regarding the expected result

Works great. At least now I have all covers in big  enough for now
