While waiting for my Jolla delivery in November
, I experimented with the SDK and emulator. I managed to add a slider for clock size and font, yet I cannot determine how to adjust the color or theme the clock. Most mobile operating systems include these features; am I pursuing the wrong approach?
Sailfish OS does, too. Here it’s called Ambiance.
I’m afraid so. Ambiances in Sailfish OS are how the owner/user decides on the looks and (some) functions of their phone. It’s a tool for personal preference and expression; apps are expected to respect the user’s wishes (and understand that those wishes can change at any time).
Some people have one Ambiance* for normal phone use, one for meetings, another to set the phone up for seeing a play at the theatre, yet another used at night and so on. The chosen Ambiance makes it really clear which mode the phone is in and makes it harder e.g. to forget it in flight mode after the play. Favourite Ambiances can be added to the Top menu, making switching a breeze.
* Ambiance combined with the Situations app for more control
As far as I know, no special action should be needed from your side to use the colours of the current Ambiance. When it comes to the size and spacing of UI elements, I think there are constants defined that you should use.
And please don’t override user choices with your preferred colours, it will just make your app look out of place and annoy people. But you are encouraged to make and distribute your own Ambiances, in case you want to share your preferred styling.
