I just linearly extrapolated the preorder numbers from the last few days, and there is no way they will reach 10,000 by January 31.
7000 is way more realistic.
But we should see how it develops over the coming days.
It’s not over until it’s over. I’m sure that TOH idea will survive in either case. If community get STL files and infrastructure (communication path, HW pins, …) many things can happen.
Minimum order quantity and profitability are two very different things.
To be honest, why not prepare the back cover to be fittable with Other Halves and leave the production to the community? They can open source the models of the cover set and watch it go.
I agree that some (if not most) of the pre-order slowdown is due to holiday season. So I think it would be crucial to re-kick start the campaign after New year’s. I still think 7k is definitely reachable. Even 10k if Jolla improves on marketing. I think that the pre-order page is still a mess (quite confusing). That should be fixed asap. The pre-order patches should be really clearly visible. Doesn’t Shopify allow to add steps to the sales goals after campaign has started? Also the days remaining still shows up until January 4th not to the end of January. Maybe some referral program should also be in place (get 20% off from one TOH or something). Happy holidays for each and everyone! ![]()
I am sorry because this is off-topic. With so much enthusiasm on a new hardware I really hope I will in the future see many more dialogs like this one.
I supoose they need to put some additonal modules in the back of the phone to communicate with functional back cover (aka TOH). It increases a unit cost therefore they need more pre orders to implement it, I assume.
It is crazy that a Jolla store doesn’t exist. For Apple or Google, it is an absolute cash cow and their cut is 30%. That is 30% of the work of other people with some administration of the store. Good money regardless.
You mean the fact that it does not allow paid apps? I could imagine they did the math and figured that taking 30% of five $1 app sales would not be worth the effort of setting everything up.
OSS communities are simply not used to paying for software.
Maybe with an influx of new users (J2) from greed-driven platforms who are more willing to be exploited, this will change.
I don’t think there are different counters, but on the other hand there obviously are some orders that are invalid or cancelled, which may very well result in the count going down temporarily whenever those are removed from the order queue.
Could be a caching issue.
I’ve seen this with the “Enjoyer!” app. If you refresh it often enough you may get different results.
Makrolon must be right, I imagine that each refund request causes the meter to drop. ![]()
Yes, that is correct. When I cancelled the extra order, the counter was updated.
saying it “doesnt allow” is a bit harsh IMO. I dont believe Jolla is per-se a “No” company, when it comes to apps..
What is with the TOH? Is this re-newed intention running again? Or what are the next boundary conditions?
Hi, thnks!
Did you make it yourself? with what software/technique?
Btw, a question from the “client” side:
Is the hosting service (Google) for your image, logging IPs (and more?) of people clicking on it?
Do you have access to these informations?
In case, there are plenty privacy and ethical oriented services to host files. Kdrive, Framadrive, etc
Cheers
I use it several times a month to navigate with PureMaps. (last time yesterday) and it works great.
Do you have some limitation from the country you live in or what is going on there?
Best regards

Financial Times has an article “How Nokia went from iPhone victim to $1bn Nvidia deal. Finnish company that brought the world the 3310 has reinvented itself for the AI revolution“ which talks about the Nokia history. Client Challenge
It states: “The arrival of the iPhone and cheaper, Android-based smartphones sparked a collapse in Nokia’s sales and appeared to put the company behind the wildly popular 3310 handset on the path to irrelevance“
What’s interesting is that the highest ranking comment is actually about Jolla, Sailfish and promotes the new phone:
“Nokia had an amazing smartphone OS, and a decent example of it on hardware, the cult-classic N9. Then Microsoft’s Steph Elop was made Nokia’s CEO, killed that project and had Nokia adopt windows as their smartphone OS, leading to oblivion in the market.
The engineers behind Maemo quit, formed a company (Jolla) that made Maemo into Sailfish, an OS which is the last viable alternative to Android/iOS.
And they are still around, making a new, privacy focused, open and community designed phone. At the time, everyone just wanted the convenience and traction of something like Android and iOS. Nowadays there is a lot more awareness of what we give away to Google/Apple by locking ourselves into their eco-systems, and the value of a European-based alternative is obvious.“
Several follow ups also from readers using Sailfish phones (C2, Xperia 10 III).
