Jolla Phone 2026: Volume Down key intermittently unresponsive

My Jolla Phone 2026 (first Batch) has a strange behavior of the Volume downaction. I am not sure if it is a hardware or software issue. My Volume Down hardware key doesn’t work reliably in all cases. For example, I set the volume to maximum, then press the Volume Down key multiple times. Sometimes nothing happens. I can still feel the click and also hear a mechanical clicking sound.

In very rare cases similar cases for the Volume Up, but not comparable to the Volume Down.

Has anyone else experienced this behavior? In some cases, it works for the first 2–3 presses, and then it stops responding even when I click it 20 times. But i still feel and hear the click. Really strange. would be great if someone else could test this as well.

I can confirm that volume+ responds more sensitively and the volume− is less so—I don’t know whether that was intended. Possibly because volume+ can be used to take photos, and that button is positioned further toward the edge of the housing and is therefore easier to reach for that purpose. It could also be related to how the driver polls/event handle and reads the buttons.

Since the buttons generally work, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Volume Down is worse than Volume Up in this case, but I’d say both don’t react particularly well to several quick presses in a row. However, just holding them down instead of quick presses works perfectly fine, so I get the impression that it’s more of a software problem. But I’m not even sure if this is specific to the Jolla Phone 2026, because on all Sailfish devices I’ve avoided the volume buttons as much as possible because I never felt they were particularly responsive, and that’s talking about the original Phone, the C, Tablet, Xperia 10 II, C2 and now the new Phone.

Yeah same here; add to that that I have a rubber casing that puts two “buttons” over the volume rocker and I’m always unsure of how well they work.

But I have no idea whether it’s a hardware or software thing.

Did you try the button test in csd-Tool? that might rule out a hardware problem

(csd tool can be entered by tapping the build number entry in settings\about product five times)

Thank you all for your feedback! I do agree, that my first thought was that the protection cover does somehow influence it.

Thanks to @davidrasch great advise to use the CSD Tool (great tool btw!!!), i can confirm that the button does not work all the time. I executed the test multiple times (testname: key) where you need to press the volume down button 5 times, and indeed it does not get every click. From my point of view this is probably a hardware bug, but I have not develop the test tool. So Jolla need to tell us.

I do hear and feel the click but the click has not being registered in the tool every time.

Thank you all for looking into it. Now I guess the next move is to clarify if:

  1. multiple people observe the same issue (please use the CSD tool)
  2. if it is a hardware issue or software bug

@Jolla could you please share how to move forward? Should the csd tool get every click?

I have the same problem. Tested with CSD-Tool. Not every Volume-Down-Press is recognized.

Same for me.
If i press closer to the middle it seems to work a lot better.

So more than a week passed and I have observed the behavior. Indeed both of them do have these problems, but as expected mostly the Volume-Down one. Sad that @Jolla does not even notify us if they take a look into this problem. Looks like multiple people does face this issue.

The issue you’re describing sounds very similar to the one the Nokia N9 had back in the day.

Noticed this too, pressing more in the middle works better, at the edge it depends on how hard you are pressing.
Volume up works as intended though.

Well, if it’s a mechanical issue, I think you could bring it up at the meeting on August 20. Looking at the situation right now, there don’t seem to be as many complaints about this as there were about the selfie camera. But maybe the buttons wore out quickly because you guys use them a lot? I’m not sure.

IMO, users in second batch shouldn’t be receiving it if it’s hardware issue. I have the same issue and it’s quite annoying. The fact that volume slider doesn’t exist by default in pull down menu doesn’t help either. (Instead useless theme selector exists by default, which is unbelievable to me).

Same here.

(Somehow I overlooked this thread. Thanks for bringing this up.)

Same here.
But
The strange thing is that the buttons do bring the volume bar into the screen on every press.
That means they work 100%.

But then, they don’t always change the volume on every press…

My phone is from batch #1 and in my case it’s a bit different. Both Volume Up and Volume Down are responsive only, if I hold them for ~1 second. It makes no difference, whether I press the buttons at the edge or at the middle.

It was a bit weird at first, but I guess it might good for avoiding accidental presses, when the phone is in a pocket or bag. At least in my case, the behaviour is consistent.

I have the same behaviour but when I kind of spam the button, the volume finally changes.

Just to know: So, in your case, while the phone is unlocked, one short press does not make the volume bar appear on top of the screen?

Sorry for confusion. Yes, I can observe that behaviour on my phone as well. I meant my post as a reply to the original post. To put it shortly: my volume buttons behaviour consistently, but they behave differently compared to 10 III for example.

Same issue for me too. Volume buttons respond intermittently and require pushing very hard to register, even with the back cover removed.

I have the same issue with the volume down button. As others described it before, the volume up button works exactly as expected and with every haptic feedback the volume changes.
But with the volume down button I observed that when I press on the lower end I have the feedback but nothing happens. It’s far more reliable when I press more towards the middle but even then it’s not always registering.

I can also confirm that I observe the same behavior in the CSD tool which makes me think that this is a hardware and not a software problem.
