ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

I assume this means normal phone calls? Have you noticed if the phone call is made through 2G?

hmm its a good question; so far its been on 4g-capable phones; so I dont think that 2g should be the bottleneck…

There is known bug with the 2g calls, thats why I asked as this sounds duplicate of the: Jolla Phone 2026 - 2G calls are incomprehensible to other side

Jolla is aware of this and can somewhat reproduce this and are investigating. But as Jolla phone can’t make Voice over wifi calls, if you are somewhere inside house for example with bad reception the calls may default to 2g for the phone call. Or generally in location where phone things Volte signal is too weak and defaults back to 2g.

Pardon my ignorance; how would the wifi impact the cellular transmission? Isnt it apples vs pears? I mean the calls should still prefer cellular network and not be routed over wifi?

Edit: i do have VoLTE registered; could that be a reason?

I think they wanted to say: If you’re in a bulding with bad reception, you may have to make your calls using the 2G Network, instead of being able to avoid that by using Voice over WiFi.

Android and IOS for example do voice over Wifi when reception is bad and can’t use VoLTE. VoLTE = Voice over internet. So it is quite standard these days to push normal phone calls over the internet and not use traditional cellular transmission. So in case of SFOS bad reception and unavailable VoLTE phone defaults to 2g calls as VoWIFI isn’t (yet) implemented. This is at least my understanding of the situation

Luckily, VoLTE and 5G worked with my provider on the JP2026 right from the start, but I couldn’t resist dropping this meme here:

I know this isn’t very helpful, but it’s somehow funny.

okay I see, so even tho im on 4g lte; I am still talking over wifi via 2g….amazing

Not talking over wifi via 2g. You would need to be connected to wifi/wlan network for your phone calls to transfer over that, but in sfos case that isn’t implemented they default back to old school 2g.

But yeah, complicated manners and I have been constantly learning new things here also

Nowadays, many people use the calling features of messaging apps—WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and so on. They all support calls over mobile data or Wi-Fi.

which operator? mines is a 4g simcard (crappy employer…)

Sorry, I forgot to mention it (it’s Friday!). Operator is “Blau” aka “Telefónica Germany” aka “O2 - de” - system profile.
The SIM card must indeed be 5G-compatible. I’m not sure whether that’s the default with every blau mobile phone plan.

thanks; I would assume that 2g is not the default way of having calls on cell net…right?

2g is the worst case fallback, so the quality is also.

I live right next to an antenna. When in-doors, the signal is steadily on 4G and strength is good (or at least thats what is shown)

Do you use a flip cover with your JP26? Some flip covers have been reported to cause acoustic feedback, including on other smartphones.

Nope, no flip cover - Jolla cover only

Same phenomenon on my Sony Xperia 10-III.

I can solve it by switching to my bluetooth connected Sony earbuds (WF1000XM) before making a call or (when I am called) asking the other side to wait a bit while connecting these earbuds.

I have not tested what happens when disconnecting again during the call.

edit: Oh, and this happens in SFOS 5.1.0.11.
I actually have set my hope on improvement when v5.2 is released to my device.
