After reading Vivaldi’s recent Digital Dugnad initiative, I couldn’t help thinking that Jolla and Vivaldi have much more in common than it might seem at first.
Both are European companies that value user choice, privacy, openness, and independence from the major tech ecosystems. Both have built loyal communities by offering an alternative rather than simply following the mainstream.
That made me wonder:
Wouldn’t it be interesting if Jolla and Vivaldi explored some kind of collaboration?
I’m not necessarily thinking about anything huge or immediate. Even small steps could be meaningful:
an officially supported Vivaldi browser for Sailfish OS,
technical discussions between the two teams,
joint promotion of privacy-focused, independent technologies,
or simply sharing ideas about building a more open web.
Vivaldi’s Digital Dugnad is based on the idea that many small contributions can make the web better. Jolla has been following a similar philosophy for years by proving that there is room for an independent mobile operating system.
Perhaps the two communities have more common ground than we realize.
What do other Sailfish users think? Would you welcome some form of cooperation between Jolla and Vivaldi?
If someone from the Jolla team happens to read this: I would be genuinely interested to hear whether this idea has ever been discussed, or whether there are technical or strategic reasons why such a collaboration would or would not make sense.
I used in the past Opera as main browser but switched to Vivaldi. Reading this digital dugnad initiative and following your logic, I would applaud loudly for a native Vivaldi browser on SFOS!!!
Proton is also part of this initiative, great idea to foster collaborations and join forces.
But again, although many forum members see synergy with fairphone, a collaboration with Jolla never materialized…
Jolla could make so much money if they were paid for everytime someone proposes their other favorite company (usually from the privacy IT business) shall partner with them
The EU is waging a war against online privacy with almost every member fully supporting it (e.g. Chat Control just passed, “age verification” is just around the corner, the digital wallet is coming, ProtectEU wants to eliminate “hurdles” like encryption preventing agencies from easily accessing whatever data they want, almost all members are in bed with Palantir and who knows what else that isn’t public), of course they won’t stand behind companies that promote it.
Vivaldi offers a browser based on code, that comes from exactly the same vendors, that Vivaldi wants you not to use any longer…. Isn’t that hipocritical?
I could accept their message, it fhey didn’t use source code for free, that comes from companies, which want you to pay for products based on that code with your private data.
So, no: I’m quite happy that the main Sailfish OS browser is based on Gecko.
