I don’t use matermost, but xmpp is outdated and no one app proviede encryption and muc, ofcause not voice or video calls.
You can check shmong for example
PS here’s one more pretty deep on Mattermost. But Delta Chat and chatmail infra are quite interesting. Traditional email, with it lacking emojis and shipping massive quote and header bloat in every message, is such an outdated tool.
I don’t argue that DeltaChat is cool or not.
I just want to be able to communicate using my phone.
My colleagues are on Mattermost and privately I use Matrix and Signal. We will get a lot of new community members and I doubt many of them will ask for DeltaChat, but rather why can’t I do this or that with XMPP, Sailtrix or Whisperfish.
And SailfishOS has a great Nextcloud integration. What is missing is native Naxtcloud Talk app.
Just my thoughts on chat…
Especially Matrix is open, cross-platform and federated and you can easily create a client that hides most of the Matrix mumbo jumbo.
I still maintain the view that the OS should be stripped from all chat integrations and just have push notifications for apps.
Less work for jolla, the community can handle the rest (apps) and so on.
I don’t argue against that.
The thing is though that at some point jolla should publish some sort of roadmap for the OS. And if possible get the community to be involved.
There are many things that need to be fixed or missing on the SW side and there seems to be no direction at all. ![]()
I wouldn’t say that there lacks a direction. Jolla has opened up source code for various parts of the OS. For many of these there is an issue list for community developers to get involved with/in.
But yes, a high-level wanted direction would have been great. What Jolla plans to do the next 7-8 months (for the when the new phone gets released and the first .x release after) and what they want the community to focus on…
Perhaps the first builds of 5.1 will give us a direction?
And who knows what were discussed over a few beers in Brussels?
While the open sourcing of apps was more than welcome it wasn’t related to the main parts of the OS and experience.
Ie. it’d be good to know what are the plans/time frame for the compositor, localization and word prediction, systemd, and other stuff here and there.
There’s the native Nextcloud Talk app. It’s sufficient for chatting. I use the app myself…
Yes, wrote that: Integrate e-mail based messenger in Sailfish OS - #18 by frankps
But not maintained and no new featueres.
Patience is required. There is more to come.
