How do licenses work nowadays?

Hi,

My 10 III broke recently and I bought a second hand C2. To my surprise the phone showed up in my jolla account without any problems after logging into the device, with activation date of whenever the previous owner must have activated it.

Which raises the question: Was this behavior always the case or is it new? Because I remember that back in ye olden days I sold my OG Jolla with my account details.

Thanks.

AFAIK on devices supplied by Jolla it is not tied to IMEI as with SailfishX (Sony) devices. Whilst Jolla original is now EOL so no longer possible to check, I can sign in on Jolla C with a different account and pretty sure applicable to Jolla Tablet too.

Well it’s definitely tied to IMEI, same as my 10 III. I guess the question I have is: Is/was the license of a device ever tied to an account {which made selling the account together with the phone necessary}? Or could anyone logging into my phone with their own jolla account always take ownership of it, given they had access? :face_with_monocle:

A buyer of a used phone can enter his own Jolla credentials but if it’s not a paid account the Android Appsupport is gone with the next system update.

The Xperia devices up to and including the 10 III require a licence to access the commercial components (which include Android App Support) which can be purchased through a one-off payment in the Jolla Shop. If those account credentials are not transferred upon sale, a new licence has to be bought by the new owner.

In 2024, following requests from the community for more options to make financial contributions to Jolla, they announced two options for future licence purchases: either a one-off payment, or a monthly subscription.

The Jolla C2 comes with a 12 month licence, at the end of this term, the user has the option to purchase a new licence through either of these routes.

When the Xperia 10 IV and V get a full release, the same options to purchase a licence will be provided from day 1
