High numbers in WLAN data counter

I did a forum search for ‘data counter’ and stumbled upon this post:

@piggz … the last couple of days I’ve been checking the data counters since it seemed that wifi traffic was consuming much more power than LTE. Over a period of 2 days, 4G/LTE only I have number like 10.3 MB up / 143.4 MB down. WLAN on for 2 days I have 8 GB up and 8.2 GB down. Same kind of usage (ie. reading rss feeds and wikipedia). I think the constant acitivity we’ve noted is conman and it’s pretty extreme. It really sucks battery.

When I check the data counters on my JP2, I get 20GB down and up(!) within a few days. After resetting the counter it shows small bits of data going both ways every second.

No apps running, AAS deactivated.

When I disable WLAN and the phone is connected only via SIM card, the SIM card counter remains still.

Is this some kind of “keep-alive”? I borrow expression from the SIP sphere, as I don’t know, if such a thing even exists in the WLAN protocol.

Anyway, is this kind of normal and it is just not shown in other OSes? And therefore maybe should be filtered by the counter? (Or at least, there should be the option to do so?)

Or should I be concerned? (I don’t think so).

I recently checked again since I noticed that I was seeing up to 400GB a month in traffic on WLAN. If I enable only the mobile data it’s much less traffic. I have a limited plan and unless I’m doing a lot of socials (mastodon) I remain under 6GB a month.

I haven’t done any analysis. Should though. See if I can get some in next week.
