Do Not Disturb Mode should block notification LED and screen shouldn't light up for notifications

REPRODUCIBILITY: 100%, Always
OS VERSION: 5.2.0.18
HARDWARE: Jolla Phone 2026
UI LANGUAGE: English (United Kingdom)
REGRESSION: N/A, was the same on 5.2.0.17

DESCRIPTION:

When Do Not Disturb is enabled, the screen will still light up for notifications (primaryly tested with Android apps).
The notification light also lights up and keeps pulsing for different notification types - message, email, etc.

This is quite the opposite of what DND should be. I expect DND to not disturb me. This is especially irritating when going to bed and the phone is placed with the screen up next to me.

PRECONDITIONS:

Have a Jolla Phone 2026 with SailfishOS 5.2

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Enable Do Not Disturb
  2. Receive a nottification

EXPECTED RESULT:

The screen should stay dark during the whole DND period. Thee notification LED should also not light up when DND is enabled. After DND is disabled, the LED can start pulsing for notifications and the screen can resume to light up on each new notification.

ACTUAL RESULT:

The screen turns on for all notifications when DND is enabled. The notification LED keeps pulsing even though DND is enabled.

Even if Android’s DND is turned on and no applications are allowed, the notifications show up in SFOS, the screen lights up, and the notification LED is pulsing.

MODIFICATIONS:

AppSupport enabled. Some Android apps installed.

It’s not a bug, but a feature request

I agree with you, if DND is enable no LED should lights up.

Ok, I’ve moved it to Feature Requests.

Interestingly, I also tried enabling DND in the Android settings and that had zero effect - the notifications were still coming in and the screen lit up, the notification LED is pulsing.

IMO DND should mean literally this - no disruptions, no nothing, unless an app or some contacts are allowed to override it (favorite contacts). For now the only option that exists is for contacts to be able to call even with DND turned on, but the feature itself is missing a lot of QoL options.

I back for it. Also hopefully DND can be set up with ambiences (but yes it would not be the mandatory update)

A bit off-topic, but have you tried the Situations app? It brings a lot of QoL and missing features like automatic DND during set hours, ambience switching (I tried simulating light and dark theme switching depending on the time of day). It also supports setting up DND depending on the active Ambience, or setting the Ambience based on the DND state. It’s highly configurable and is what saved me a lot of trouble.

Situation app is nice but needs to be running all the time(if I’m not mistaken).

Yes, it has a background service that needs to be installed. It’s a non-issue for me, though.

Everyone has their own preference as to what degree of disturbance the mode should prevent, so i’d prefer these to be user configurable suboptions. Shouldn’t be too much extra work for a bit of a user experience boost.

As for what would be the default, i’d think the LED should stay on but screen off with DND. I’m thrilled to have a notification LED again for the exact reason of being able to check without being alerted or touching the phone. I could be totally wrong, but i’d guess this would be along the lines of average user expectation.

I agree with you, having options will always be the best case to fit all kinds of user cases.

I’m not sure where to look at the source code, though. If you can provide some guidance, then I’d love to contribute with a PR!

Have you checked if that maybe isn’t possible already, idk maybe via dconf keys?

Shouldn’t be too much extra work

Coding every little bit into the UI certainly is.

It could already be implemented and i just didn’t stumble upon it yet (in a VM, still waiting for my hardware), but i was more commenting on the general guiding principle in the context of this thread. I of course didn’t mean coding the options would be no effort, but that the effort would be worth it for the user experience, if modifications were to be made.

I’d love to see DND with ambiences, it makes using ambiences much more attractive.
