Dex and Sailfish

I used DEX a lot with my Note 9  just connect to the docking station and you have small PC for some Mails, Messaging and small office things. I miss this opportunity since I changed to Xperia 10III for private usage. For my Job it is Pixel with Graphene now.

I used Dex in my previous job, I did not carried my laptop to the office when I had many meetings onsite and did not need the full computational power for statistical analysis work.
That was charming to carry only the Samsung phone, plug into the dock for light office stuff and videoconferencing.
There are valid use cases for convergence…
Privately I need a computer once a month, so convergence would be ideal for my use case to replace my 2006 laptop…

Which is ? I’m guessing a USB docking thing with a keyboard and screen?

As well as an interface designed for larger screens, that apply only to the larger screen (as I understand, the phone’s screen was still usable as usual).

Yes, docking station was from my dell with USB C, connected to a monitor 24ā€, keyboard and mouse.

Like I remember, in the Dex mode, the smartphone screen was not really full usable. But it was possible to turn it into mouce pad

Yes, and with the Note or Ultra pen you could even handwriting notes on the phone while the USB-C out was connected to the external screen, mouse and keyboard.
For productivity this was top notch…

Highly interested in such application!

So for the first I have to check how SFOS’ behavior is with current OS version when connecting and disconnecting an USB-C docking station or USB hub/HDMI interface.

Months ago when I tried this, the external mouse and keyboard did work but on disconnecting, SFOS crashed.

Ok, got it. I used to own a motorola dock consisting of a screen, keyboard and track pad. You plugged the phone in at the back. It was a bit ā€˜ahead of it’s time’ and android, so it sucked. I was doing more writing on the road at the time, so I was hoping it’d be good for that. I am now a thinkpad junky, so it’s probably not for me

I have a Dex tablet, it’s still android and it still sucks. I was enthusiastic when I purchased it as my first Android device, thinking I would be using it for convergence. It’s actually very neat. But then I discovered what Android really was.

I thought the FOSS guys would have compiled versions of my regular apps, say the KDE desktop apps, so I would be able to use Android like a normal computer with my favourite apps. I was wrong, Play Store doesn’t have FOSS apps, the concept there is cloud-based paid subscriptions and customer lock-in. Not for me. F-droid exists but is very limited. Anyway the apps are optimised for fat fingers, they are so limited in function. I miss the menubar of regular apps. I tried install a Debian inside Android with a VNC connection, but it’s too inconvenient for daily use.

I’m hopeful for SFOS to one day be my converged OS. Someone commented it was once possible to install flatpak packages. In combination with USB-C video out, it would make my dream true of a miniature linux computer for light travel.

Ah, thank you. I never used Dex personally, just misremembered what I read at the time.
