I got my new Jolla Phone yesterday - but I’m facing several camera issues. Latest Update is installed.
The colours of photos show massive differences. Photos taken with the 0.5 camera have bright colours and are okay, photos taken with the 1.0 camera are less bright and miss brilliant colours.
The 0.5 camera causes some kind of fish-eye effect at the top (in vertical orientation, in landscape mode on the left side). Lines that are straight in real life view are bend and slightly rounded. Vertical lines are tilted.
Older devices had camera filters (okay, didn’t work on Xperia 10 III at all, but are shown there. But I can’t find that on the new Jolla Phone…
So while 1. and 3. are probably software related I really think and fear that the fisheye effect is a hardware problem with the camera on my phone. Would be pleased to get some feedback on this, how do your devices behave?
“Problems” 1.) and 2.) you are facing are due to lack of image post processing. More mature mobile phone manufacturers are doing image post processing to minimize differences between lenses (color/exposure- wise) and to “straighten” (I’m missing a better word for this) fisheye effect of ultrawide lens.
You can also consider this as a feature - you are getting all of the visual information from ultrawide lens, which looks a bit distorted, however if the image was post-processed it would have been cropped to fit into rectangular image ratio.
At this point there is nothing you can do about this, this needs to be implemented in the camera software.
Comment to point 2 in the Listing: I think this is called correction of barrel distortion to straighten the lines. (Tonnenförmige Verzeichnung in German.)
Should be a very common and easy thing to correct with any basic image library.
But that fisheye effect is just there on the new Jolla Phone, I had nothing similar on previous SFOS phones - and I used the patch for all three cameras on 10 III. So if it’s a software thing why does it juat affect the new Jolla Phone, or is it related to camera drivers?
I have this exact same effect on my Xperia 10 II, maybe not that noticable but it is there. It also depends on the type of lens used and if there is already some HW level cropping/correction done (which is related to the sensor and driver used). It IS possible this is HW issue but I have seen this so many times on custom ROMs for android phones so at this point I just expect to see this distortion on everything that is community driver (or from smaller companies that don’t have budget to implement this)
I guess you are right. I would always expect a fisheye distortion (barrel distortion) at the focal length of the 0.5 optics. I suppose this is typically compensated by software in other phones.
I think we should make a new section about the camera issues, because they are mostly coding issues. If you take photos in dark settings there are lots of low quality issues.
I don’t think changing from 4:3 to 16:9 will really fix it, it will probably just crop the image and make the distortion less visible.
I think the real solution is adding proper barrel distortion correction for the 0.5 camera. It should work on both the preview and the final photo.
Maybe it would also be good to compare it with other Jolla Phones. If all of them have the same problem then it’s probably software or driver related, but if only some phones have it this bad then maybe it could also be a hardware issue.
Fossify Camera (AAS) is not able to se the lens that cause the effect…
What I don’t understand so far when it comes the software arguments above is if that’s an app releated, an os related or a driver related problem. Especially the fact that this also happens with the Android App makes me wonder as we always had the situation with different camera APIs - and other then SFOS with still just API 1 does Open Camera use API2 if I remember right.
When you buy for example Sony android phone with stock camera app. Manufacturer of that phone (sony) made sure that the stock app, developed by sony, does proper barrel distortion fix (among other things).
Manufacturer also make sure that those features are also properly implemented on camera api level 1 and 2.
SFOS communicates with camera hardware through android hardware layer and we just don’t know to what degree that implementation is complete. We don’t even get RAW image support.
From my experience, all of my phones that had LineageOS running had barrel distortion on cameras. It’s just much more noticable on ultrawide camera. This is how lenses work. The “upside” is you get more information from image (it’s not cropped).
It is what it is. Until someone tackles SFOS camera performance seriously be happy that you have all three cameras working
